Living in a very, very rural area facilities are limited and I find myself using the Internet for more and more of the activities I used to undertake face-to-face.
I read a lot and it occurred to me that there might be other readers out there who would welcome the opportunity to get together in a virtual sense to read and discuss books.
My thoughts haven’t consolidated into a plan. Yet. Perhaps a discussion forum, a chat room, a telephone conference call or chat on Skype?
Fiction or non-fiction or a mixture of both?
Perhaps a couple of book choices each month to keep everyone happy?
I’d be happy to host the technology but don’t have time to police it so it would be behind a membership screen to keep out trolls and spammers. No fees or charges but everyone is responsible for sourcing their own copy of the books to be read.
Perhaps individuals recommending books and taking the lead in starting and stewarding the discussion?
Is there any interest or appetite for this?
Or, perhaps you know of a good online reading group already that I might be welcome to join?
Either leave your thoughts in a comment or make use of the contact form.
I shall be interested to know what you think.

Hi Dee — Sounds like it would be a good idea. However, I know for my own situation and from previous experience with book groups — I just don’t keep up. Maybe it’s my reading habits, but I have too many books going at the same time so it takes quite a while to finish. There are three reading groups around where I live that I know of, and they’re all doing great. So you may have hit on a need for folks in those far-flung places.

Ron – I know what you mean. I always have a pile of books on the go at the same time. I had thought we might just have a forum thread (or something similar) for each book so people can hop in and out as they want to, rather than having set deadlines……… I’m not good with deadlines……..:-(
That is an interesting idea. I haven’t been part of a book club for years. I too find it hard to keep up with a physical club because of the lack of spare time that seems to exist in daily life. A forum of some variety with open threads sounds like it might be a great approach.
The forum idea sounds good, time is so stretched these days – and there are times when you want to stretch your reading muscles, and time when you just want to feed it sugar! a forum thread would give the opportunity for both
